Juju Moments

Have you ever had those moments when you just blurt something out and the moment it leaves your lips you cringe? Why on earth did I say that? What was I saying? Anyone who knows me well, knows I have these moments more often than I would like to admit. I like to fill the silence. You are also all pretty aware of my attitude problem.

Those of you reading this have probably heard my dad tell this story from the pulpit a few time, but it is truly too relatable sometimes. We had this dog, her name is Juju after the Tak and the Power of Juju Nintendo game. It was a family thing for another story. She is a Pomeranian/Dashound mix. Small and yappy! More yappy than anything! If she heard a shadow, she would bark until she found it and scared if off… We would often laugh at her because when we needed her to shut up, we would literally hold her mouth shut, but she would STILL CONTINUE TO BARK! Sometimes we would have to tap her on the head because she just wouldn’t stop! She would even bark and immediately cringe! But she just kept barking! It became a joke in our house though because my dad and I would often have “Juju moments.” We literally could not help what we were saying. Sometimes things come out of my mouth, and I immediately cringe internally…

When Jake and I were newly engaged, I remember he went on our family vacation with us, and we had joined some of my parents’ best friends. Uncle Al (dad’s best friend) was going to officiate our wedding and was asking Jake a ton of questions! I did not understand half of them, and I finally cut him off with a laugh and said, “Okay, that is just a stupid question!” Uncle Al and Jake both looked at me. I saw the hurt on Uncle Al’s face and the shock on Jake’s face. Jake corrected me and told me that they were not dumb questions, but Uncle Al was done talking. I felt so stupid and to this day, I cannot help but to cringe when I think of that moment. It’s been ten years! I cannot change it or take it back, but I really do wish I could!

God actually commands us to bridle our tongue. Clearly, I am not great at this, but if we would give Him the attention, He can help us be more conscious of these things. Some of my biggest regrets are the idiotic things that I have said. Like Juju though, I cannot help myself. I have learned as I have gotten older to use wisdom and I often bite my tongue (literally) so that I will not say something stupid, but there are still times when I have my Juju moment and cringe…. Even with a hand over my mouth because I give into my flesh.

Proverbs 10:19 (KJV)

In the multitude of words there wanteth not sin: but he that refraineth his lips is wise.

All of us probably have those moments!! Worse are the things we say (and write) that we never know are taken wrongly, or don't understand why it wasn't appropriate!! YIKES...talking is dangerous!
